The Big Brush Workshop created by
Carmen Lund was
held at Silvermine Gallery in New Caanan on January 6 & 7 from 10am-2pm.
Paint
and Paper was supplied in the workshop. Participants were asked to
bring a 2 inch or a 1 1⁄2 inch flat brush for this workshop. Carmen
suggested the Princeton 2” but added that another brand of brush that is
the same size is fine.
She
also asked that students bring a sampling of their work for the class to
look at it and Carmen offered a critique.
|
Both experienced and beginning painters are welcome for a
way to find and release creative flow. Carmen added, "You will be
surprised by the immediate results it will bring forth in your work."
Students are lead through a series of carefully planned exercises which will
free up their innate creativity. A new way of thinking and seeing will be
introduced to participants which will greatly impact their paintings.
Students should come with an open mind and the willingness to let go
of all the “should’s” you have learned over the years. |

Carmen introduces herself and explains that each participant must begin with
an open mind and no picture predetermined |

Everyone had to add their idea to a large paper pinned to
the wall. |

We were asked not to have the paint with us, just to add a color - one at a
time- |
 |

Carmen then discussed the results, the brightness, the
open images and the freedom expressed. |

Then we were on our own. |

Although we were asked not to have preconceived ideas, many artists began
with what they knew. |

Carmen answered questions throughout the day. |

She also provided encouragement. |

The finished results were lined up on the floor, |

along with the mural. |

The finished results were discussed individually |

and as a group critique. |

The goal of the program is to have each artist look at objects differently.
We were shown how to crop our images, turn the canvas or look at partial
images. Everyone was pleased with the results and the work provided a
venue for creativity. |
Sara,
A sculptress, brought her work with figures into her work with paper and a
big brush. |

Many of the artists will continue their studies at Silvermine,
including taking classes with Carmen. Others asked for further Big
Brush workshops and Carmen has agreed to outside group workshops.
