Joan Kelly did an independent study of the Art Collections in Vienna, Austria January, 2005. While receiving her masters of fine arts, she did her assistant teaching in lithography with Rosalie Appel and in painting with Marjorie Portnow. Joan spent January through August, 2003 in Italy creating a body of work in oils and studying art history. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1993 with an Arts Major in Painting, graduating Magna Cum Laude. In 1987-88 she studied Traditional Chinese Painting with Diana Kan and at the Studio Art School Of the Aegean, Samos, Greece, she studied with Ruth Miller and Andrew Forge. Joan is an Assistant Professor, teaching drawing at Nanyang Technological University in a 3 year contract that began July 25, 2005. She says, "Through my experience studying with Margaret Grimes and Marjorie Portnow I feel I have a strong foundation as to how to approach and express the ideas of art from a variety of directions. Being Marjorie Portnows' teaching assistant was one of the greatest privileges of my education. My study has immersed my life in the language of art, and I feel equipped to lead the creative life of my choice and teach others while doing so." Joan sent an update from Singapore during the University break (9/05). She was sent on a fresco workshop and was taking tea lessons as well as philosophy.

Joan Kelly is a visual Artist working primarily
as a painter in oils. Her work is involved in observation and the act of
seeing, and the process of transforming. Her canvases are created on site.
She works with still life and landscape simultaneously. The space created by
the over lapping of these subjects is an integration of two dimensional
picture plane and a three dimensional perspectival vision. There is a great
sense of openness and optimism through her use of color and paint handling
even when she is painting the objects of the vanitas. |
