First Year Experience 07-08

Congratulations on getting close to completing your first semester at Westconn.  You probably are in the middle of planning your schedule for next semester and you need to keep in mind that you are part of the FY program.   How do you know that you’re in the FY program?  One or more of your courses this semester has the designation “FY”.  That means that you are part of an exciting new initiative designed to facilitate the academic transition to college.  The first year program consists of regular general education classes taught in a different, more interactive way. For more information about FY at Westconn, click HERE.

FY students will need to work with an advisor to register for appropriate FY course(s) in your second semester because by the end of your first 30 credit hours, you should complete at least 3 FY courses.  Therefore, when building your schedule for next semester, you and your advisor need to consider which FY courses would be most appropriate for you to take during Spring 2008.

If you’re enrolled in one FY course this semester, you should plan on taking two FY courses during Spring 2008.  If you’re enrolled in two FY courses this semester, you should plan on taking one FY course during Spring 2008.  You should work with your advisor to determine the most appropriate FY courses for you.

How do you identify FY courses?  In Open/Close, select all subjects .  Next, in the course number box, type %FY.  Then click on “Class Search”.  The results will be limited to FY courses.

Practical benefit of FY courses: Only  FY students (those taking at least one FY course this semester) may enroll in FY courses.  As a result, several courses (e.g. Communications) that would normally have closed by the time you register will still be available to first year students, which will help with building a schedule for next semester.

Remember: if you’re enrolled in on FY course now, you need to register for two FY courses for Spring 2008 (in addition to your other courses).  If you’re enrolled in two FY courses now, you need to register for one FY course for Spring 2008.
