WestConn hosts first graduate commencement ceremony

It is my pleasure to provide you with information about the first graduate commencement ceremony to be held at Western Connecticut State University. The commencement will be held in Ives Concert Hall, White Hall, on Friday, May 18, 2007, at 7p.m., with a reception for graduates to follow in Warner Hall. Music will be provided by our Faculty Brass Quintet, and the commencement speaker will be WestConn’s President James Schmotter. A highlight of the ceremony will be the hooding of our graduate students by their program coordinators.

A Graduate Commencement Committee with representation by faculty members, graduate students and staff continues to meet to plan the event. The focus for the inaugural ceremony is on our students, and we hope to present a meaningful and special evening. The committee members welcome your input; please contact my office at (203) 837-8929 if you know of a commencement tradition that you would like to see incorporated.

Additional information will be provided to graduating students about ordering caps and gowns and RSVPs for the ceremony and reception. All graduate students who complete their program in January, May or August 2007 are invited to participate in the ceremony. You must apply for graduation in the Division of Graduate Studies office in Old Main 206, or call (203) 837-8244 to request the form, in order to participate. You may check the university Web site (www.wcsu.edu/commencement) for updates, and a commencement booklet will be mailed to your home once you have applied for graduation.

We will establish a new tradition at Western Connecticut State University with our first graduate commencement ceremony, and I look forward to sharing the event with our students, their friends and family, and our university community members.
