ABOUT WCSU INSTITUTE FOR HOLISTIC HEALTH STUDIES (IHHS)

The Institute for Holistic Health Studies (IHHS) is housed within WCSU’s Department of Health Promotion and Exercise Sciences (HPX). The IHHS was the brainchild of Dr. Jeanette Tedesco, former Chair, Health Science Department, and Faculty Emeritus. The mission of the IHHS is to provide the university and broader community with an opportunity to explore holistic health through programming and instruction. The IHHS, in conjunction with the HPX Department, plan to offer instruction via a holistic health option in the near future.

Holistic health is an approach to creating wellness which encourages individuals to recognize the whole person: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. The individual is encouraged to actively participate in their health decisions and healing process, and in making wellness-oriented lifestyle choices. There are many specific applications and forms of holistic health. Some are derived from ancient healing traditions and others from modern research. These areas include: stress management, behavioral medicine, biofeedback, Autogenic Training, Traditional Chinese Medicine (including acupuncture, acupressure, herbology, nutrition, qi-gong), meditation, guided imagery, yoga, therapeutic touch and energy therapies.
