Building Academic Success

Is your son or daughter unsure how to pick a major?  How can you help get your student off to a good start at college? What should their game plan be for success?  And speaking of success, how do they find out about career options?  These questions will be addressed by representatives from our Academic Advisement Center, Counseling Center, and Career Development Center. Learn the secrets to helping your student achieve academic success, develop their college calendar and get important tips to use in their very first semester and throughout their time at college.

The Importance of Getting Connected at WestConn

Students entering their first year of university face a range of challenges in making a successful transition from high school to college.  The goal of this workshop is to review those challenges and to provide suggestions on how parents can assist their students in making important campus connections.

Specific Topic Workshops:  11:00am-11:40am and 11:45am-12:25pm

Each workshop will be presented during both sessions.

Financial Aid

This workshop offers an introduction to the financial assistance available through the Financial Aid office, such as: student grants from private, state and government organizations, low-interest loans with deferred payment schedules, scholarships and on-campus employment opportunities.  The workshop will also focus on alternatives concerning financing your student’s education through payment plans and alternative loans.

Don’t Go It Alone – Academic Advising(not available on Thursday)

One of the myths about college is that the only role of an academic advisor is to take care of helping students register for class. Not so! Come and learn about the real roles between the academic advisor and the student, and how it can impact their success. Also, we’ll share ten tips for parents to know to help their son/daughter be more successful at college. Don’t (let them) Go It Alone.  

Visit our CULTURE ™:  Housing & Residence Life at WestConn

Whether or not your student has decided to live on campus, join the staff of the Department of Housing & Residence Life as we “show and tell” about what it is like to live on campus.  You’ll discover the nuts and bolts (costs, due dates, when your student will know their room assignment) and you’ll find out about the great experience our staff is planning for your student’s on-campus experience.  Join us in exploring the CULTURE ™ of the WestConn residence life!

Campus Safety

This workshop will focus on transitional issues facing college students today in terms of personal safety on a college campus.  Issues to be discussed include independence and responsibility, setting expectations and facing issues of alcohol and drugs.  Our new partnership with the Women’s Center of Greater Danbury will also be discussed.  Also, services provided by the various offices and how you can help your student remain safe on campus will be discussed.

AccessAbility Services

WestConn recognizes students’ rights to reasonable accommodations and necessary services to support their educational experience.  This workshop will introduce parents to the staff of WestConn’s Office of AccessAbility Services who will provide an overview to the services which include advocacy, confidential counseling, academic advising, accommodation planning and referrals and other important services that are of value to the student.
