WestConn survives UMass Dartmouth comeback bid to win 80-77
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA (Jan. 30) — Leading by 10 points with 38 seconds to play, the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team nearly watched UMass Dartmouth rally at home to pull off the comeback, but the Colonials prevailed 80-77 Saturday afternoon.
Junior center John Phillips (Hartford, CT) led five Colonials in double figures with 18 points, hitting seven of eight shots from the flour and a perfect four for four from the line. Also scoring in double figures for WestConn were sophomore DaQuan Brooks (Bristol, CT) with 16 points, junior Will Jarrett (Hartford, CT) with 12 points, sophomore Gary Robinson (Torrington, CT) with 11 points, and freshman Cody Bayne (Bristol, CT) with 10. Jarrett led the Colonials on the boards with seven rebounds, while Brooks handed out a game-high six assists.
For UMass Dartmouth, Brandon Shelton (Cambridge, MA) and Lance Greene (Dorchester, MA) each broke the 20-point barrier with 26 and 21 points respectively. Greene also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
For the game, WestConn held a 40-29 advantage on the boards while also outscoring UMass Dartmouth 18-12 from the free-throw line. The Colonials committed 24 turnovers to 14 for the Corsairs.
With the win, WestConn improves to 13-4 on the season and 6-3 in the Little East Conference, while UMass Dartmouth falls to 13-6 and is also 6-3 in the LEC. The Colonals will be in action again on Tuesday evening, Feburary 2nd, when they host Mitchell College at Feldman Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.
