JAMIE PROCINO LEADS WESTCONN PAST EASTERN, 82-65
Colonials never trail after opening two minutes in posting Little East victory
from the desk of Bob Molta, ECSU SID

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Senior forward Jamie Procino (Yortktown Heights, NY) had 13 points and a game-high 17 rebounds and sophomore forward Wilburt Jarrett (Hartford) contributed a game-high 19 points off the bench to vault Western Connecticut State University past Eastern Connecticut State University, 82-65, Tuesday night in a Little East Conference men’s basketball game at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.

With its fourth straight win, Western (13-8, 5-6 little east) avoids a season sweep at the haneds of Eastern (12-10, 5-6 little east) for the first time in 15 seasons of conference play. Eastern had snapped a string of six straight losses to Western at Feldman Arena three weeks ago with a 70-63 victory.

Ranked in the conference’s top five in rebounding and field goal percentage, Procino led the Colonials to a +10 margin in rebounding with his game-high total. He was 6-for-9 from the floor as Western converted 60.0 per cent (24-of-40) of its two-point field goals to overcome 4-for-19 shooting from three-point range.

Despite averaging less than eight points and five rebounds this year, the 6-foot-5 inch Jarrett led all players in the game with 19 points in 30 minutes off the bench. Like Procino, he was 6-for-9 from the floor and also sank 7-of-10 from the free throw line to spark the visitors to 22-of-29 marksmanship from the stripe. Jarrett also added nine rebounds and turned the ball over only once in 30 minutes. Sophomore guard Tyshawn Gillespie (Hartford)  followed Jarrett with 17 points and led all players with five assists and commited only one turnover in 34 minutes.

Senior forward Leon Martin (Woodbury) and freshman guard Courtney Simmons (Middletown) led Eastern with 14 points each, sophomore guard Edwin Ortiz (Hartford) adding 13 points and senior forward Kevin Zalucki (Enfield) 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Eastern senior guard Kris Johnson (Sturbridge, MA), the conference leader in three-point field goals, was held scoreless in the game, missing five three-point attempts. Martin and Zalucki, who had combined for 34 points and 26 rebounds in the win over Western earlier, both fouled out of the game inside the final five minutes.

Eastern matched its third-lower turnover total of the season with eight, but hindered its efforts with 7-for-16 shooting from the foul line.

WestConn travels to Keene State College this Saturday, February 16 for a 3 p.m. tip.  Eastern hosts Massachusetts Dartmouth Saturday at 3 p.m.

WestConn nips PSU Men’s Basketball
Gillespie’s late hoop upends Panthers
from the desk of Kent Cherrington - PSU SID

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Tyshawn Gillespie (Hartford, Conn.) grabbed the rebound from his own missed shot and laid it off the glass and in with two seconds remaining Saturday afternoon, giving Western Connecticut State University a 75-73 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference men’s basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.

Both teams had opportunities to win the game, as the scored was tied at 73-73 with 2:24 remaining in the game. But the defenses applied heavy pressure down the stretch, as each team had three possessions with a chance to take the lead but could not convert. Gillespie finally won it for the Colonials with two ticks on the clock, and PSU’s half-court shot at the buzzer bounced off the backboard.

Senior Jamie Procino (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led the Colonials with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Gillespie finished with 12 points and seven assists. Junior Dashon Jennings (Bridgeport, Conn.) added 11 points and freshman Michael Jensen (Gales Ferry, Conn.) chipped in with 10.

Plymouth State had five players finish with double figures in scoring. Junior Ben Huntington (Hampstead, N.H.) led the way with 16 points and sophomore Jason O’Keefe (Everett, Mass.) finished with 15. Senior Chris Wilkinson (Newmarket, N.H.) registered his first double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, while sophomores Mike Chergey (Bow, N.H.) and Bryan Tracy (Manchester, N.H./Central) chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

It was anyone’s game throughout the first half, with five lead changes and neither team leading by more than four points over the first 18 minutes. WestConn outscored PSU 8-4 over the final two minutes to take a 36-29 advantage into the locker room.

WestConn took its largest lead of the day early in the second half, a 12-point margin (44-32). But PSU came alive and outscored the Colonials 17-4 over the next six minutes, taking a one-point lead (49-48) with just under 13 minutes to play. There were six more lead changes in the second half with neither team leading by more than one possession, and Procino tied things up for the Colonials at 73-all with 2:24 on the clock.

The Colonials won their second straight game to improve to 11-8 overall and 3-6 in the Little East, while PSU lost for the fifth consecutive outing and dipped to 4-15 and 1-8.

PSU will try to snap its skid Wednesday with a non-conference battle at Lyndon State College (7:30 p.m.), while WestConn is off until next Saturday when it hosts UMass Boston (3:00 p.m.)

Jennings Beats Buzzer to Lift WestConn Over Newbury, 74-73

DANBURY, CT (Jan 31) – Junior Dashon Jennings (Bridgeport, CT) scored 16 points for Western Connecticut State University, including a dramatic game-winning basket to lift the Colonials over Newbury College, 74-73, in a non-conference matchup Thursday night at Feldman Arena. Jennings also led the Colonials with seven assists.

Also scoring in double figures for WestConn were freshman Michael Jensen (Gales Ferry, CT) who scored a game-high 25 points, including seven baskets from three-point range, and senior Jamie Procino (Yorktown Heights, NY) who scored 12 points and led the Colonials with 11 rebounds.

Arch Mitchell (Framingham, MA) led Newbury College with 24 points. Kevin Cleveland (Lynn, MA) scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Steven Morris (Somerville, MA) scored 13 to go with five assists in a losing effort for the Nighthawks.

Newbury took control of the game early and established an 11 point lead (33-22) with three minutes remaining in the first half. WestConn then went on a 13-3 run and went to the locker room trailing by only one point, 36-35. The score remained close throughout the second half with 13 lead changes and seven ties. With 1:54 remaining, Dashon Jennings hit a jumper that put WestConn ahead 72-69, but on their next two possessions the Colonials failed to convert free throws leaving the door open for Newbury. Kevin Cleveland hit a layup to draw the Nighthawks within one with less than a minute remaining and when Javon Mathis (West Hartford, CT) blocked a Jamie Procino shot with 30 seconds left, it set up the game’s dramatic finish. With 10 seconds remaining, Kevin Cleveland hit a jumper from the free-throw line that gave Newbury a one-point lead, but WestConn coach, Bob Campbell, calmly called a timeout to set up the game’s final play. The Colonial’s inbounds pass went to Michael Jensen who had been hot throughout the second half, but he was quickly double teamed. Jensen handed the ball off to Tyshawn Gillespie (Hartford, CT) who fired a pass to Jennings just inside the three-point line to the left of the basket. Jennings released the ball quickly in a high arc to avoid a charging Newbury defender, watched while the final buzzer sounded just as the ball reached its highest point, and then was mobbed by his team mates as the ball found the middle of the net for a 74-73 final score and a victory for WestConn.

With tonight’s victory, Western Connecticut State University raises its record to 10-8 (2-6 in the Little East Conference), while Newbury College falls to 8-7.

WestConn travels to play Little East Conference rival Plymouth State Saturday, February 2nd. Game time is slated for 3:00pm.

UMASS DARTMOUTH HOLDS ON TO DEFEAT WESTCONN, 72-67

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-(Jan. 26, 2008) - Senior center Dan Holbrook (Lexington, MA/Lexington HS/Westfield State) made two free throws with 23 seconds left to break a 67-67 tie and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team scored the final nine points of the game and came from behind to defeat visiting Western Connecticut State, 72-67, in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The victory allowed the Corsairs to remain one of two unbeaten NCAA Division III men’s basketball teams in the nation.

The Corsairs trailed, 67-63 when sophomore guard Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) made two free throws to cut the margin to two points with 2:36 remaining. Senior forward Cory Tynes (Springfield, MA/Commerce HS) followed with a jumper to tie the score with 2:01 left. Kyle Norfleet of the Colonials was called for a charging foul when he scored with 48 seconds remaining, then Holbrook drew a foul and connected twice from the line to put UMass Dartmouth ahead to stay.

WCSU called time out, and Wilburt Jarrett’s baseline jump shot with nine seconds remaining missed, Holbrook was fouled, and he hit a free throw to make it 70-67. The Colonials called time once more, and a baseline three-pointer by Dashon Jennings caromed in off a support cable, and was waved off with just under two seconds remaining. Freshman forward Brandon Stephens (Dorchester, MA/Newton North HS) added a pair of free throws with one second left to clinch the victory.

Western Connecticut took a 36-33 halftime lead, but the Corsairs used a 12-2 run early in the second half to lead, 47-41 with 15 minutes to play. The Colonials came back, tied the game, took the lead on Jamie Procino’s jumper with 5:49 remaining and held it until UMass Dartmouth’s final rally.

“We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we normally do from either the perimeter or the foul line,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. “We did a good job slashing and going to the basket, and we got more of our points inside than we normally do. We have a lot of good three-point shooters, and we missed a lot of shots that we normally would make. We have to give Western credit, we knew they would come and play hard, and they played intense, pressure defense.”

Tynes led UMass Dartmouth with 18 points, Holbrook added 17 and Stephens contributed 11. Procino had 15 for WCSU, while Jennings and Jarrett each had 12. Procino grabbed 11 rebounds, but Holbrook and Tynes each grabbed eight, and the Corsairs won the battle of the boards, 32-31.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 17-0 and 7-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Western fell to 9-7 and 2-5 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host UMass Boston in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Tuesday evening, while the Colonials will host Rhode Island College on Tuesday.

Southern Maine Edges Western Connecticut, 84-83
f
rom USM office of Sports Information

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Jamaal Caterina (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored a career-high 24 points, including 14 in the second half, to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a thrilling, 84-83 win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials Saturday afternoon in Little East Conference men's basketball action at Warren Hill Gymnasium.

With the win, USM improves to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in the Little East. The loss was the third straight for Western Connecticut which drops 8-5 overall and 2-3 in conference action.

Caterina controlled the post for USM knocking down 8-of-14 from the floor while making 8-for-10 from the free throw line to lead three Southern Maine players in double-figures. Senior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) recorded his first 'double-double' of the season with 18 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. It was Coppenrath's sixth 'double-double' of his career. Senior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) added 14 points and three assists.

Junior guard Dashon Jennings (Bridgeport, Conn./Bassick) and sophomore guard Tyshawn Gillespie (Hartford, Conn./Glastonbury) led the Colonials with 18 points apiece. Freshman guard Michael Jensen (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) came off the bench to score 15 points, including three three-point field goals.

Both teams shot well in the first half and entered the break tied at 38-38. USM shot 51.6 percent (16-for-31) from the field in the opening stanza, while Western Connecticut shot 46.7 percent (14-for-30) from the floor, including a remarkable 58.3 percent (7-for-12) from three-point range. Jensen connected on all three of his three-pointers in the first half, while Jennings made two of his three.

The Colonials held a 32-23 lead with 5:58 to play in the first half after Jensen's final three-pointer. USM used an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to knot the score at 34-34 with 2:02 remaining. Coppenrath scored five of his points in the run, while Caterina added four. USM took a 38-36 lead with nine seconds left following a dunk from senior forward Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif./Mount Diablo), but Western Connecticut beat the buzzer on a jumper from junior forward Marcus Mann (Windsor, Conn./The Master's School).

USM scored the first basket of the second half to retake the lead and led by as many as 12 points, 74-62, with 6:27 to play before the Western Connecticut staged a rally.

After shooting 70.8 percent from the field ( 17-of-28) in the first 15 minutes of the second half, the Huskies were leading, 78-69, with 5:14 to play. Over the final five minutes, the Huskies combined for an 0-for-3 effort from the floor, committed five turnovers and shot 6-for-12 mark from the foul line.

Conversely, Western Connecticut barreled its way back into the game with a 14-4 run over the next four minutes to go ahead, 83-82, with 1:24 to play. Gillespie used his speed during the run to get to the basket and force USM defenders to commit, scoring 10 of the Colonials' 14 points on a pair of coast-to-coast lay-ups and a 6-for-6 mark from the free throw line. Gillespie's final two free throws capped the run and put his team ahead by a single point, but were the last points of the game for Western Connecticut.

Coppenrath gave the lead back to the Huskies, 84-83, with a pair of free throws with a minute remaining before both teams misfired on their final possessions to close out the game. Western Connecticut had a chance to score the game-winning basket after USM missed a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining, but the Colonials were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer expired.

Southern Maine finished the game shooting 56.9 percent (33-for-58) from the floor, while Western Connecticut finished the game shooting 48.1 percent (25-for-52).

Southern Maine travels to the University of Massachusetts Boston on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) for a Little East Conference game. Western Connecticut hosts LEC rival Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).
