KEENE, N.H. 10/27/07 - Sophomore back Ross Stanton (Bethlehem, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal early the second half and later stopped a potential tying goal later in the game to lead the Keene State College men's soccer team to a come-from-behind 2-1 Little East Conference victory over Western Conn. State University in Keene on Saturday.

Undefeated in its last 10 games (8-0-2), Keene State (10-4-4, 4-2-1 LEC) will be either the second or third seed in the LEC tournament which begins on Wednesday. A win by UMass-Dartmouth over Eastern Conn. will give KSC the second seed.

Stanton's game-winner goal, his second of the season, came four minutes into the second half when he knocked home a rebound past Colonial goalie Daniel Michalowski (Bristol, Conn.) "I just ran around the back and was at the right place at the right time," said Stanton.

Stanton preserved KSC's one goal lead with a standout defensive play at the 17:20 mark of the second half. With Owl goalie out of position, Stanton went between the pipes, and got a foot on a shot by Shane Edgley (Oakdale, Conn.). "Cal came out and I dropped in for him," said Stanton. "It's a big net and I was lucky to get my foot on the ball."

After Edgley was taken down in the box, Luis Duque (Naugatuck, Conn.) gave WCSU a 1-0 lead at the 30:49 mark of the first half on a penalty kick goal.

The Colonials had a chance to extend their lead minutes later, but Owl goalie Cal Mintz (Westport, Conn.) went high and tipped a dead ball shot by Edgley just over the cross bar.

Junior midfielder Ben Allenet, tied the game at the 31:27 mark. The junior transfer student from France got control of a loose ball just outside the box and scored his third goal of the season.

Western Conn. had a couple of opportunities to tie the game in the closing minutes. As shot by Steven Carniero (Danbury, Conn.) hit the post and a drive by Michael Serra with 30 seconds to go sailed over the net.

Mintz stopped five shots for the Owls. Michalowski finished the game with eight saves for WCSU, which concludes its season with a 5-12 (1-6 LEC) record.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 24, 2007) – Colin Cook’s (Wilbraham, Mass.) direct free-kick goal from just outside the 18-yard box proved to be the game-winning tally as the Springfield College men’s soccer team defeated visiting Western Connecticut State University,  1-0, on Wednesday evening at Brock-Affleck Field.

With the win, the Pride improve to 8-7-2 and finish the regular season with a .500 record for the first time since 2001. The loss drops the Colonials to 5-11 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, the Pride were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Cook took the direct free kick from the right side and found the upper ’90 on the left corner to give the home team a 1-0 advantage with 56:42 on the clock.

B.J. Sturdivant (Bear, Del.) picked up his fourth shutout of the season after making four saves in goal. With the game in the balance late in the contest, Sturdivant made a sprawling kick save on a Matthew Lupinacci shot with 11 minutes left in the game to preserve the shutout.

SOUTHERN MAINE CRUISES TO 2-0 WIN OVER SHORTHANDED WESTCONN

DANBURY, CT (Oct. 20) — Sinisa Bajic (Belgrade Serbia) scored the game’s only goals as the University of Southern Maine defeated Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut State University 2-0 at the Westside Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon. Bajic’s first goal was scored on a penalty kick in the game’s 19th minute, while his second came off an assist from Erik Waite (Lewiston, ME) five minutes later.
     In the 11th minute of play, WestConn’s Jay Crawbuck (Dix Hills, NY) and a Southern Maine defender became entangled as both fell to the turf.  After both players' arms and legs became untangled, Crawbuck received a red card from the referee for fighting and the Colonials were forced to play a man short for the remainder of the game.
     Southern Maine’s goaltender, David Kreps (Agawam, MA), registered seven saves in the shutout against of the WestConn offense that attempted 16 shots for the game. WestConn’s goalie, Daniel Michalowski (Bristol, CT), also made seven saves in a losing effort for the Colonials.
     With the win, Southern Maine raises its season record to 9-6-1 overall, 5-1 in the LEC, while WestConn falls to 5-10 overall, and 1-5 in league play.

DANBURY, CT (Oct. 17) - Junior Daniel Michalowski (Bristol, CT) recorded 12 saves in goal for Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team as they fell to Wesleyan 3-1 Wednesday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.
     WestConn took an early 1-0 lead when a Shane Edgley (Oakdale, CT) crossing pass ricocheted off a Wesleyan defender directly into the goal in the game’s second minute. The “own goal” was the only goal for the Colonials who were shut out for the final 88 minutes by Wesleyan goal keeper, Matt Gnall (Morristown, NJ), who had nine saves.
     Matt Nevin (Denville, NJ) got the Cardinals on the board in the 20th minute off an assist from Nick Whipple (Montclair, NJ), to tie the score at 1-1. In the second half, Austin Woolridge (South Orange, NJ) scored the game-winner off an assist from Geoff Zartarian (Falmouth, MA). One minute later, the Cardinals put the game out of reach on an “own goal” which scored when a corner kick deflected off a Colonial defender.
     The Cardinals improve their season record to 8-4, while the Colonials’ 2007 record now stands at 5-9.

     Steven Carneiro (Danbury, CT) scored WestConn’s second goal in the game’s 35th minute to close out the scoring for the game.
     Back in goal at the WAC for the for the first time in three weeks after being sidelined with a shoulder injury, Daniel Michalowski (Bristol, CT) recorded five saves in a shut out performance, including two diving saves in the game’s finals minutes.
     UMass Boston goaltender, Paul Maniscalo (Hanover, MA), registered 11 saves against a WestConn offense that attempted 27 shots for the game.

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Pat Connolly (Newton, N.H.) recorded a hat trick Saturday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to a 4-0 victory over Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference men’s soccer match at Panther Field.
     Connolly, who had not scored in his previous 26 career games, scored twice in the first half to help the Panthers to a 3-0 lead, and finished off the hat trick by converting a penalty kick with five minutes left in the game. The Panthers get back to the .500 mark at 4-4-1 overall and 2-2-0 in LEC play, while Western Connecticut dips to 5-7-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the conference.
     PSU junior goalkeeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, N.H.) needed to make just two saves to record his first shutout of the season. The Panther defense, which limited the Colonials to 11 shots, was led by senior Takeru Tanikawa (Shizuoka, Japan), juniors Corey Cenate (Springfield, Vt.) and Gareth Stephens (Yeovil, England) and sophomore Drew McSpiritt (Londonderry, N.H.)
     Connolly put the Panthers on the board in the 24th minute, heading the ball in off a corner kick by senior Keith Whittemore (Holderness, N.H.) and added his second goal 11 minutes later with an assist from freshman Alex Ciccilinifoley (York, Maine). Junior George Delano (Kingston, N.H.) made it a 3-0 game just before the half, and the Colonials never threatened in the second half.

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men’s soccer team broke from a scoreless first half to take control in the second half on the way to a 2-0 Little East Conference victory over Western Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon at Thomas Nevers Field.

With the win, Eastern (4-3-0, 2-0-0 little east) opens its conference season with two straight wins for the first time since 1998, when it opened LEC play with three straight wins before dropping three of its final four in the conference. With an 8-1-2 record, the Warriors have lost only one of their last 11 conference regular-season matches, dating back to the final two matches of the 2005 season. Western is 4-4-0 overall, 0-2-0 in the conference.

After Eastern senior keeper Jay Barney (Mansfield) and Western junior keeper Daniel Michalowski (Bristol) combined to make 11 saves in a scoreless first half, the Warriors broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half when sophomore midfielder Nicholas Boretti (Marshfield, MA) scored his first career goal on a rebound of a shot by senior forward Rukevwe Ehwarieme (Norwich).

“At halftime, we challenged our players to come out and get a quick goal,” said first-year Eastern head coach Greg Devito. “We created a great chance, and put it home, and Nick Boretti did a great job finishing it off with a 1-touch finish. I think that goal took the wind out of Western’s sails pretty quickly.”

Barney was relatively untested the rest of the way in recording his 18th career full match shutout in 48 starts (as a freshman, Barney made six saves in a scoreless overtime draw at Western). Last year’s LEC Defensive Player-of-the-Year, Barney lowered his goals-against average to 0.78 and raised his save percentage to .875 by making eight saves.

The Warriors held an 11-4 advantage in shots in the second half, and sophomore forward Maxim Fantl (West Hartford) added an insurance goal with 15 minutes left when he found the far corner of the net with a shot from the right flank. The goal was the team-leading fifth of the year and 12th in 24 career games for Fantl, last year’s conference Rookie-of-the-Year.

“This was one of the first games where Rook (Ehwarieme) and Max were really playing together, and actually connecting and staying connected.” noted DeVito of his starting forwards. “You could hear them communicating out there. They were just ‘on’ on the whole game. We asked the team at halftime to communicate better, and I think that Rook and Max really communicated well.”

Michalowski made nine saves for Western before leaving the match due to an injury with 22 minutes left.

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Odinga Andenga (Kakamega, Kenya) tied the Valiant men’s soccer match at two in the 79th minute and the lone senior on the 2007 Valiant squad, Andy Rotondaro (Wethersfield, Conn.), netted the game winner in the 92nd minute in the overtime frame, as the Valiants defeated Western Connecticut 3-2 at GoValiants.com Field Wednesday.

In a very physical contest, the Valiants out shot the Colonials 20-10 while controlling the ball for most of the game. They suffered a bad break early in the first half when Western Connecticut was awarded a penalty shot on a takedown in the box. Shane Edgley scored on the penalty shot to put the Colonials ahead early.

The Valiants knotted the score at one in the 17th minute when Kris Morrice (Kirriemuir, Scotland) scored his first of the season off a pair of nice passes from Andenga and Kenneil Haye (Queens, N.Y.).

The match remained tied until the 74th minute, when Western Connecticut’s Robert Madden was left all alone on a restart to the left of the Valiant goal. He chipped one past keeper Jason Torres (Harrison, N.Y.) to take the lead.

In the 78th minute, after a flurry of shots from Haye and Anthony Ferraro (Bronx, N.Y.), Andenga was able to knock in a rebound to send the match into overtime.

Shortly after the start of the overtime, Rotondaro took a pass from Haye and put it past Western Connecticut keeper Daniel Michalowski to give the Valiants the 3-2 victory and Torres his first career win.

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Western Connecticut State University got two goals from senior Shane Edgley (Oakdale, CT/Montville) including the game-winner with a minute to play in the second overtime as the Colonials bested Fitchburg State College, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Elliot in the season opening game for both clubs.

Western Connecticut had a chance to win the game in the 90th minute on a point-blank shot by senior Patrick Odell (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) but Falcon netminder Evan Ouellette (Cornish, ME/Sacopee Valley) was able to get a piece of the ball with his left hand to preserve the tie game.

Fitchburg State struck first at the end of the opening half when freshman Kevin Mascary (North Easton, MA/Oliver Ames) scored on a breakaway. The goal in the 39th minute was set up by junior David Tyler (Hubbardston, MA/Quabbin), who sent Mascary in alone with a through ball.

The Colonials knotted the game at 1-1 with just under 15 minutes to play in regulation on an Edgley blast that snuck inside the left post.

WCSU goalkeeper Daniel Michalowski (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) made five stops in net. FSC starting goalkeeper Matt Carey (Stratford, MA/Bunnell) turned away all three shots he faced in 70 minutes of play while the backup Ouellette was credited with three stops.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Keene State College men’s soccer team has been predicted to repeat as Little East Conference champions after a vote by the conference’s eight head coaches. The Owls earned six first-place votes and a second-place tally for 48 total points. Each head coach cast a vote, but could not select their team.

Under the watchful eye of Head Coach Dr. Ron Butcher, Keene State College has hoisted the Little East Conference championship trophy five times since 1999, reaching a conference-high six berths in the championship round. Last season, the Owls posted a 15-6-1 overall record, including a 4-2-1 mark in the conference circuit. Butcher led his charges to a 3-0 victory at Plymouth State University in the championship round of the Little East Conference Tournament, recording the program’s eighth NCAA Tournament appearance in the past 10 campaigns. Keene State returns nine starters from last season’s squad, including National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-New England Region, second-team selection junior forward Alex Horne (Harvard, Mass.).

Plymouth State University, the 2006 conference regular season champions and tournament finalist, enter the 2007 campaign in the No. 2 position, just six points off the Owls’ pace. The Panthers received a first-place vote and five second-place tallies for 42 total points. In 2006, Head Coach Rob Wright guided his squad to an overall record of 10-7-2 and registering his fourth consecutive ECAC Tournament berth. The 2006 Little East All-Conference second team pick Keith Whittemore (Holderness, N.H.) highlights a highly-talented Plymouth State squad.

Eastern Connecticut State University edged Rhode Island College for the No. 3 spot. The Warriors earned the final first-place vote and 30 total points, outpointing the Anchormen by just two points.

The University of Mass. Boston (26) and Western Connecticut State University (26) share the No. 5 position, while the University of Southern Maine (16), the University of Mass. Dartmouth (8) close out the coaches’ rankings.

The Little East Conference kicks off its 12th season on Sept. 1, when three conference members take to the pitch. The top four schools in the final regular season standings qualify for the Little East Conference Tournament, beginning on Oct. 31. The Little East Conference champion will be crowned on Nov. 3 and earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

DANBURY, CT – (August 17, 2007) - Keith Mcloughlin has been appointed the new Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach at Western Connecticut State University on Friday.
     Mcloughlin has extensive experience working with premier club and high school teams in both Connecticut and Massachusetts, most recently as a member of the Soccer Extreme coaching staff.
     He served as the Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Regis College (Weston, MA) from 2001-2002.
     Born in London, the United Kingdom native holds the UEFA B Soccer Coaching License and attended Abingdon College (Oxford, UK) from 1995-1999.
     He will assist the Colonials in all facets of the game, as well as undertaking the specific duties related to goalkeeper training.
     The WestConn men’s soccer season kicks off at Fitchburg State College on Saturday, September 1.
