WestConn men fall to Albertus Magnus in season opener, 3-0

DANBURY, CT (Sep. 2) —Albertus Magnus College opened the season with a 3-0 victory over the Western Connecticut State University men’s soccer team at the Westside Athletic Complex on Wednesday night.

In the seventh minute, the Falcons, 1-0, got on the scoreboard early when Nick Hamansian (Hamden, CT) placed the ball in the right corner of the goal following a corner kick from Taylor Sasloe (Norwalk, CT).

The visitors tallied another quick goal in the opening minutes of the second half to double the Colonials deficit, 2-0.  Jamal Howard (West Haven, CT) collected a loose ball in the WestConn defensive third and went in uncontested.  His first goal of the season came 3:39 into the second stanza.

Sasloe added an unassisted insurance goal in the 60th minute for the winners.

WestConn, now 0-1, outshot Albertus Magnus, 20-11 on the night but only six of the attempts were at goal.  The Falcons made the most of their tries as three of their shot at goal, found the back of the net.

Gerald O’Connor (Hamden, CT) made six saves for Albertus Magnus while Keith Guillette (Seymour, CT) made one stop in his first collegiate contest.

WestConn hits the road for the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Tournament.  It plays Cobleskill on Saturday at 2 pm.  The Colonials then will face host MCLA in the second day’s action.  That game is slated for 12 noon.
