WestConn men's soccer blanks Westfield State, 3-0

BOX SCORE

DANBURY, CT (Sep. 16) — The Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team improved to 2-3 on the season with a 3-0 victory over Westfield State College at The WAC on Wednesday night.

After a 0-0 deadlock through the first 45 minutes, the Colonials got on the scoreboard when Daniel DeSilva (Danbury, CT) scored his first goal of the season in the 50th minute of play. His blast from just outside the left side of the box deflected off an Owls' defender and past keeper Lucas Dexter (Acushnet, MA).

WestConn scored two late insurance goals to seal the victory. Luis Duque (Naugatuck, CT) put the home team up 2-0 in the 85th minute when he converted a penalty kick that was awarded when a Westfield State defender prevented a shot attempt by pulling on the jersey of Daniel Sanchez (Canaan, CT).

Four minutes later, Matthew Hoffman (Bridgeport, CT) scored his first goal of the season. He was set up off a combination of passes, started from a free kick from Chris Hoagland (Newtown, CT) and onto the foot Shane Edgley (Oakdale, CT).

Freshman keeper Angelo Tsingerliotis (Norwalk, CT) earned the shut out in his first appearance for the Colonials. He made one save.

Dexter made six saves for Westfield State before yielding to Jeff Pepoli (Ashburnham, MA) for the final 22 minutes of action. Pepoli made three stops and allowed two of the markers.

The Colonials travel to Willimantic on Saturday to meet arch-rival Eastern Connecticut. The Little East Conference opener is slated for 1 pm.
