Strong second half lifts WestConn over UMass Boston, 3-0

BOX SCORE

DANBURY, CT (Oct. 10) — After a scoreless first half, the Western Connecticut State University men’s soccer team exploded for three second-half goals to defeat Little East Conference Rival UMass Boston 3-0 Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletics Complex.

Although UMass Boston outshot WestConn 9-4 in the first half, the Colonials came out firing in the second half taking the first four shots of the half.  Ten minutes into the second half, sophomore David Quenah (Granby, CT) worked the ball down the left side of the field and around two UMass Boston defenders.  A third defender challenged the ball as it was brought into the left side of the box near the end-line, but Quenah fired a pass across the face of the goal where senior Chris Hoagland (Newtown, CT) was waiting to redirect the ball into the back of the goal for a 1-0 WestConn lead.

With ten minutes remaining in the second half, WestConn extended the lead to 2-0 when junior Daniel DaSilva (Danbury, CT) found senior Frank Rizio (Monroe, CT) slicing between two defenders in the middle of the box.  Rizio quickly delivered the ball high into the left corner of the net.  Two minutes later, junior Mike Sullivan (Shelton, CT) lofted a corner kick into the middle of the box where sophomore Ryan Rose (Bethel, CT), in spite of being dragged down by a Beacon defender, beat a diving UMass Boston goalie to the left side of the goal to make the WestConn final margin of victory 3-0.

For the game, WestConn finished with a 17-12 advantage in shots (13-3 in the second half) and an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal.  WestConn’s Angelo Tsingerliotos (Norwalk, CT) finished with three saves in goal (all in the first half) and takes the win for the Colonials, while Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, MA)  recorded five saves in a losing effort for UMass Boston.

With the win, WestConn’s season record now stands at 4-7, 1-3 in the Little East Conference.  UMass Boston is now 3-5-1 on the season, 1-2 in the LEC.

WestConn hosts Wesleyan in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday evening, October 14th.  Game time is slated for 7:00pm.
