Southern Maine men's soccer holds on for a 1-0 win at Western Connecticut
DANBURY, CT (Oct. 17)— Junior midfielder Alex Burnham (North Yarmouth, ME) scored his third goal of the season in the 35th minute of play and the University of Southern Maine men's soccer team held on for a 1-0 victory over host Western Connecticut State University at The WAC on Saturday afternoon.
Burnham's game-winner was initiated from a corner kick by Jeff Soules (Scarborough, ME). Soules bender, from the right side, was deflected out to the top of the box by WestConn keeper Angelo Tsingerliotis (Norwalk, CT). Chad Boucher (Saco, ME) calmly passed the ball to Burnham in the middle of the box and hit buried it in the back of the net.
The victory lifts the Huskies to 6-6-1 overall and 2-2 in the Little East Conference. WestConn drops to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in the league.
WestConn had several good chances to tie the game in the opening 10 minutes of the second stanza. First with 36:15 remaining, Chris Hoagland's (Newtown, CT) left-foot attempt from 10 yards out, drifted over the crossbar. A minute later, Daniel Sanchez (Canaan, CT) was awarded a free kick just outside the box on the right side, but the blast was saved by Southern Maine keeper David Kreps (Agawam, MA).
Kreps finished the day with nine saves while Tsingerliotis made three stops for the Colonials.
The Colonials out-shot Southern Maine, 19-9 on the afternoon.
WestConn host Ramapo College in a non-league match on Wednesday, October 21. Kick-off is slated for 4 pm. The Huskies travel to St. Joseph College in Maine for a 3 pm match, also this Wednesday.
