WestConn season ends with 2-1 loss to UMass Dartmouth
DANBURY, CT (Oct. 31) — The Western Connecticut State University men’s soccer team concluded the 2009 season with a 2-1 loss to Little East Conference rival UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletics Complex.
At the 30:00 mark of the first half, UMass Dartmouth was awarded a corner kick which was taken by Kyle Lopes (Somerset, MA). Lopes’ kick travelled across the box and over a large cluster of players to Jason Couto (Somerset, MA). Couto quickly settled the ball and rifled a pass through several WestConn defenders to Ebenezer Vicente (Praia, Cape Verde) who was positioned on the opposite side of the goal. Vicente redirected the ball past a scrambling WestConn goalkeeper and into the back of the goal for a 1-0 UMass Dartmouth lead.
Six minutes later, WestConn tied the score 1-1 when junior Daniel DaSilva (Danbury, MA) brought the ball up the right side and fed a perfect pass to sophomore David Quenah (Granby, MA). Quenah worked the ball quickly around a UMass Dartmouth defender on the right side of the box and fired a shot that beat the Corsair goalie high to the near-side corner.
UMass Dartmouth regained the lead with two minutes remaining in the half when Robbie Muller (Rochester, MA) fed Matt Correia (Dracut, MA) to give the Corsairs a 2-1 lead at intermission.
In the second half, physical defensive play limited opportunities at both ends of the field, and when shots were taken acrobatic saves by both goaltenders prevented any further goals from scoring. Late in the second half after making a diving save, WestConn’s keeper Angelo Tsingerliotos (Norwalk, CT) was involved in a collision with a UMass Dartmouth forward that forced Tsingerliotos out of the game. After a scoreless second half, UMass Dartmouth escaped with a 2-1 victory over the Colonials.
For the game, UMass Dartmouth held a 20-11 advantage in shots, an 8-5 edge in shots on goal, and had six corner kicks compared to two for WestConn. UMass Dartmouth’s Mike Phelan (Carver, MA) made four saves in goal to earn the win, while Tsingerliotos finished with six saves in the loss for the Colonials.
WestConn concludes the 2009 season with an overall record of 4-13, and a 1-6 record in Little East Conference play. UMass Dartmouth finishes the regular season at 9-6-2, 3-3-1 in the LEC.
