LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT KEENE STATE SCORES THREE IN THE EIGHTH TO DEFEAT COLONIALS, 5-2 WILLIMANTIC, CT - After battling back to lock the score at 2-2 with a pair or runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Western Connecticut State University softball team's hopes of defeating Keene State College, fell short. Pinch hitter Stephanie Lavado delivered a two-RBI double off Colonials reliever Cortney Romyns. The Owls added an insurance run on their way to a 5-2, eight inning victory in the opening round of the Little East Conference Tournament at Spector Field, on the campus of Eastern Connecticut State University. The Colonials scored two runs in their last at bat before the extra frame. Romyns tripled home an unearned run and Kristen Lugovich plated Romyns with a sacrifice fly to even the game at 2-2 in the seventh. The Owls, 23-10, scattered nine hits with Jenna Patnode and Julie May each collecting two hits apiece. WestConn, 28-12 and ranked third in New England, had seven hits on the night including a pair from freshman right fielder Amy Hartman. The Colonials will face host Eastern Connecticut in the opener on Friday at 1 p.m. WestConn will try to avoid elimination against the Warriors, a team it split a doubleheader with earlier this season. Keene State will take on Rhode Island College at 3 p.m. The Anchorwomen defeated University of Southern Maine, 6-3 earlier on Thursday. Southern Maine was eliminated in the LEC Tournament nightcap when they dropped an 8-6 decision to Plymouth State University. |

UMass Dartmouth Drops
Doubleheader to Western Connecticut
From the desk of Dave Geringer, UMD Sports Information Director NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA (Apr. 26) - Western Connecticut State held the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s softball team to one run and eight hits and swept a Little East Conference doubleheader, winning 5-0 and 7-1 at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon. Freshman third baseman Kate Kelly and sophomore third baseman Emily Surprenant (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) had two hits each for the Corsairs, who scored their only run in the sixth inning of the nightcap on a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Vicki Andruszkiewicz (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS). Stacey DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay HS) led the Colonial attack, driving in two runs for Western Connecticut in the opener and getting three hits in the nightcap. Senior Courtney Romans (Newton, NJ/Blair Academy) scattered three hits in six innings to win the opener, improving her record to 6-0, while junior right-hander Amie Nickerson (Wrentham, MA/King Phillip HS) took the loss and fell to 5-12. In the second game, senior Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT/Seymour HS) and sophomore Kara Cullinane (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst HS) combined for a five hitter, with Slie earning the win and improving to 15-6 and Cullinane pitching the final three innings for her first save of the year. Freshman right-hander Ashley Puls (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield HS) started and took the loss for UMass Dartmouth, falling to 1-11. “Once again, when we play strong teams, we have to play well defensively,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kelly Roy-Sale. “When you score one run in a doubleheader, you’re not going to win too many games. We have to be able to make all of the routine plays. Overall, I think we did some good things this year that we’re going to be able to build on for next season.” WCSU improved to 28-11 and 10-4 in the Little East Conference with the sweep, while UMass Dartmouth dropped to 6-24 and 2-12 in the Little East. The Colonials advanced to this week’s Little East Conference Tournament, while the losses were the final action of the season for the Corsairs. |

ANCHORWOMEN SWEEP
COLONIALS from the desk of Scott Gibbons - RIC SID Providence, RI—Rhode Island College took two games from Western Connecticut in a battle of two Little East Conference softball heavyweights on Tuesday afternoon at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex. The Anchorwomen raise their overall record to 29-5 and remain unbeaten in the LEC with a 12-0 mark. WestConn falls to 23-11 overall and 8-4 in league action. In the first contest, RIC freshman catcher Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) blasted a one-out, two-run home run (2) off WestConn senior reliever Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT) in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Anchorwomen a 4-2 walk-off win. The Colonials built a 2-0 advantage with a solo home run (4) by freshman designated player Meghan Mammone (Stamford, CT) in the third inning and a bases loaded RBI walk from senior third baseman Stacey DiMaggio (Hopewell Jct. NY) in the fourth. Rhode Island College tied the game in the fifth frame as sophomore shortstop Kelsey Souza (Braintree, MA) scored on an error and senior third baseman Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg, MA) plated classmate first baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) with a crafty bases loaded, RBI-bunt single that was just over the reach of WestConn senior first baseman Megan Brunnell (North Attleboro, MA). Freshman pitcher Melanie Neece (Westfield, MA) earned the win (15-2), allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out five. Western Connecticut senior pitcher Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ) took the loss (4-1), allowing three runs on one hit, while striking out two. RIC rode the momentum into the nightcap to end the contest in just five innings with an 8-0 decision. Lotti blasted a 1-1 pitch over the right field fence off DiMaggio to lead off the home half of the first. The Anchorwomen put the game out of reach the following inning. After one run had already scored on a throwing error, the Colonials intentionally walked Lotti to load the bases. Freshman second baseman Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA) followed with a grand slam homer (3) over the left field fence to make the score 6-0. Bilek rounded out the offensive outburst to make the score 8-0 with a two-out, opposite field, two-run double in the fourth inning. RIC sophomore pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) hurled her first collegiate no-hitter, earning her second shutout victory on the season as she improved to 13-2. DiMaggio took the loss (1-1), allowing just one earned run on two hits in 1.2 inning of work. The Anchorwomen honored their three seniors prior to the start of the game as Bilek, Lotti and senior catcher Jeanne Rosa (Milford, CT), along with their families, were recognized prior to the start of the doubleheader. In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will close out the regular season at Little East Conference rival Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Apr. 26. The Anchorwomen can wrap up their fourth consecutive LEC Regular Season Championship, along with the right to host the conference tournament, by winning one of the two games with the Warriors. RIC will also be looking to establish a new school record for the most conference wins in a season. The previous mark of 12-2 was set by the 2005 and 2007 editions.

WESTCONN AND SOUTHERN MAINE SPLIT CRUCIAL TWINBILL DANBURY, CT – (April 20) – The Western Connecticut State University softball team split a crucial Little East Conference doubleheader with the University of Southern Maine, taking the first game, 9-0 in six innings then dropping the second game, 3-1 at Westside Field Sunday afternoon. In the opener, senior righty Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT) allowed just one hit and struck out 11 and the Colonials took full advantage of five Huskies’ errors. Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ) drove in the game’s first run with a single up the middle in the third inning. Pinch runner Tiffany Risucci (Waterbury, CT), who ran for Meghan Mammone (Stamford, CT) after she led off the inning with a double down the left field line, came around to score. After a wild pitch, by Huskies starter Sarah Deroche (Portland, ME), moved Romyns to third base, Kristen Lugovich (West Haven, CT) put down a perfect squeeze bunt and Romyns came in to score. WestConn led, 2-0 after three innings. The Colonials added two runs in the fourth. Stacey DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY) scored following a throwing error by USM first baseman Heather Gilman (Fairfield, ME). Brittany Finkeldey (Ivoryton, CT) put WestConn up 4-0 when she touched the dish after Becca Andruskiwec’s (Orange, CT) reached first on an infield error. They added an insurance run in the fifth when Lugovich scored on a pass ball. One inning later, DiMaggio belted a grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game, by virtue of the NCAA eight-run mercy rule. It was her fifth home run of the season. DiMaggio went 5-for7 with four RBI and two runs scored in the doubleheader.
In the second game, Sabrina Sevigny (Sanford, ME)
provided all the offense the Huskies would need
when she hit a three-run home run, her fifth of the
season, deep over the left-field wall. Two innings
later, she drilled a double down the left field line
and finished the game by going 2-for-3. Kristina Grondin (Sanford, ME) had command of her rise ball and used her change up in a timely fashion to keep the Colonials’ hitters off balance. She allowed one unearned run on six hits while striking out eight and walking just one. She improves to 8-3 with the victory. Slie, who allowed three runs, two of them earned, on five hits and struck out eight, took the loss and falls to 13-6 on the year. WestConn is now 23-9 overall and 8-2 in the Little East Conference. Southern Maine sits at 13-15 overall and 4-6 in the conference. WestConn wraps up the regular season with four road doubleheaders beginning with a twinbill at Rhode Island College this Tuesday, April 22. First pitch is slated for 3:30 in Providence, RI. The Colonials, with a pair of games remaining at UMass Dartmouth next Saturday, need to sweep the Anchorwomen to keep their hopes alive of hosting the Little East Conference Tournament, which begins on Thursday, May 1. The Huskies host Plymouth State University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Freshman center fielder Alexandria Quinn (Brockton, MA) beat out a bunt to shortstop to lead off the bottom of the third for the Beacons, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Faffley single up the middle to cut the deficit to 3-1. Western Connecticut State broke the contest open with eight runs in the fourth, taking advantage of three UMB errors and getting a two-run single from Finkeldey to highlight the inning and give it an 11-1 advantage. Romyns (4-0) earned the win from the pitching circle for Western Connecticut State, allowing one run on three hits and no walks, while setting down three batters on strikes in three innings, before yielding to senior Stacey DiMaggio, who threw one-hit ball for the final two innings and struck out five against just one walk. In the nightcap, the Colonials put two runs on the board in the first. Angiolillo continued her hot bat with another RBI double and DiMaggio, after a wild pitch moved Angiolillo to third, drove her across with an infield out.
They took a 7-0 lead with five runs in the third
inning. The big blow, a two-run home run came off
the bat of freshman right fielder Amy Hartman
(Ellington, CT). Four of the runs in the frame,

WESTCONN EARNS SPLIT WITH MANHATTANVILLE DANBURY, CT – (April 9) – Freshman righty Brittany Conners (Waterford, CT) came on in relief in the second game and lifted the Western Connecticut State University softball team to a doubleheader split with Manhattanville College at Westside Field Thursday night. The Colonials came from behind to defeat the Valiants, 7-6 in the nightcap after the visitors captured the first game, 6-3. In the opener, Manhattanville’s Maura Bruen (North Salem, NY) went the distance and improves to 1-2 on the season. She allowed five hits, three runs, two of them earned and struck out four. Bruen gave up eight walks on the afternoon but none of them resulted in a WestConn run. WestConn scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brittany Finkeldey (Ivoryton, CT) drove in Loren Angiolillo (Wolcott, CT) on a squeeze bunt then came around to scored on a double by Stacey DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY). DiMaggio went 3-for-3 in game one. Trina Ramsdell (Newtown, CT) brought the Valiants within one run, 2-1, after she hit her second home run of the season, this one over the center field wall. Lindsay Zekus (Sleepy Hollow, NY) tied the game at 2-2 after she scored on an error by second baseman Kristen Lugovich (West Haven, CT) on a double-steal attempt. WestConn pushed a run across in the third, again on a squeeze bunt. This time, Rebecca Andruskiwec (Orange, CT) drove DiMaggio in giving the Colonials a 3-2 lead. Ramsdell scored on an RBI double from Amanda Nonis (Brampton, Ont.) in the top of the fifth to knot the game at 3-3. Ramsdell, who led off the fifth with a single, went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in the opener. One inning later, Ramsdell lined out to center field for a sacrifice fly RBI before another run scored on a single by Zekus and Manhattanville pulled ahead, 5-3. Manhattanville added an insurance run in the seventh. Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT) pitched well for the Colonials but falls to 9-5 on the season. She allowed 10 hits, six runs, two of them earned and struck out 10. The Colonials committed six errors in the opener. In the nightcap, the Valiants jumped out to a 2-0 lead following a two-run home run by Zekus off WestConn starter Kara Cullinane (Lindenhurst, NY). Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ) had an RBI on a squeeze bunt, in the bottom half of the opening frame, to bring the Colonials within one run, 2-1. Two batters later, Andruskiwec and then Amy Hartman (Ellington, CT) hit back-to-back RBI singles to give WestConn a 3-2 lead after one. Nonis belted her first home run of the season, a three-run shot, in the third inning to give Manhattanville a 5-3 cushion. A RBI double from Alexa Chebetar (White Plains, NY) chased Cullinane from the game and gave the Valiants a 6-3 lead. Culliane allowed nine hits and six runs and did not walk or strike out a batter. The Colonials, 15-7, went ahead, 7-6 in the four-run fourth. Romyns connected for a two-RBI single while Angiolillo and Finkeldey each drove in a run with singles. Conners, who came on in relief of Cullinane in the third inning, earned the victory and improved to 2-0 on the season. She went 4 1/3 and allowed just one hit while striking out one and walking two. Conners allowed just one ball, the final out of the game, hit out of the infield. Samantha Howe (Wappingers Falls, NY) took the loss and falls to 1-7 on the season. Manhattanville is now 6-18 on the season. WestConn hosts a pair of games against Plymouth State University this Saturday, weather permitting. First pitch is slated for 12 noon. WESTCONN SOFTBALL SWEEPS PAIR FROM DANBURY, CT – (March 30) – The Western Connecticut State University softball team swept a doubleheader from Keene State College, 4-1 and 16-9 in the 2008 Little East Conference opener for both teams at Westside Field on Sunday afternoon.
In the opener, WestConn starter Shelby Slie
(Seymour, CT) worked out of a jam in the third
inning. After allowing the first two batters to
reach base, she struck out the next three batters
looking to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0. Slie,
who left the game for two batters in the sixth
inning, earned the victory after striking out eight
and walking two. She allowed one run on six hits. In the seventh, Angiolillo led off with a 10-pitch walk then moved over to third base on a sacrifice by Lugovich. After advancing to second, Angiolillo moved on to third when she noticed the base not covered by the Owls’ defense. The junior short stop came in to score on a sacrifice squeeze by Brittany Finkeldey (Ivoryton, CT). Finkeldey was thrown out at third, trying to advance on the error. Stacey DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY) and Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ) followed with back-to-back home runs to expand the Colonials’ lead to 4-1. With a 2-0 lead in the second game, Meghan Mammone (Stamford, CT) gave the Colonials a 5-0 advantage after she pounded her first home run of the season, a three-run blast over the wall in right center, in the top of the third inning. The Owls drew within four runs, 5-1 when Jenna Patnode hit a home run over the wall in left in the bottom of the third.
The Colonials tacked on three more runs in the top
of the fourth on RBIs from Romyns, Andruskiwec and
Mammone. DiMaggio, a starting third and first baseman her first three years, made her second appearance on the mound. She struck out the first four Owls. She improved to 1-0 after she went four innings, allowed eight hits, struck out five and walked one before being chased after allowing three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Slie came on to retire the first two batters she faced before Stephanie Lavado laced a ball to center field. Andruskiwec over ran the ball and two runners crossed the plate to make it 9-8 through five.
WestConn put a three spot on the board in the top of
the six with an RBI single from Slie and a two-out
two-run single by Lugovich. It scored four more
runs in the seventh for the final. GAME NOTES: The doubleheader was moved to WestConn due to several inches of snow still on Keene State’s field. The Owls were the home team. |
