ALEX AITCHISON RETURNS TO
COACH MEN'S TENNIS TEAM

   
      
Alex Aitchinson has returned to coach the men's tennis program at Western Connecticut State University after retiring a year ago.  He guided both the men's and women's programs beginning with the men in the spring of 2003.
     During his first tenure, the Colonials men's program went 28-7 over four campaigns.  The women netters went 12-20 from 2003 through 2005.
     Former WestConn number one singles and doubles standout
Stacy Slater took over the helm of the women's program last fall.
    
Aitchison originally came to Western Connecticut after a lengthy and legendary playing and coaching career. 
    
He is the former Program Director and Teaching Professional at Beaver Brook Tennis Club in Danbury, Connecticut.  Since 1987, Aitchison has been the President of Tennis Consultants International, a management and consulting service for tennis clubs, associations, organizations and individuals.
     He was the Girls Tennis Coach at nearby Immaculate High School prior to his appointment at Beaver Brook Tennis Club.
     In 2001, Aitchison was inducted into the Newtown (CT) Sports Hall of Fame.  A year later, he was inducted into the Eastern Tennis Hall of Fame.  In 1992, the Eastern Tennis Association named him “Man of the Year”.
     Aitchison’s outstanding playing career, which began in 1940, is highlighted with two Singles’ Championships from Ringwood Tennis Club in Australia in 1963 and 1964.  He is also the holder of numerous tournament titles in Australia and the United States.  He also competed in the Victorian Pennant.
     The 1955 graduate of Melbourne University would go on to represent Australia in the Stevens Cup (men’s senior international team competition) for five years from 1980 to 1984.
     Highlighting Aithison’s list of chairmanships and membership are: the U.S. Open Junior Championship Committee, the U.S.T.A. Circuit Regulations Committee, the U.S.T.A. Olympic Committee and the U.S. Junior Davis Cup Committee.
     In 1977 he founded and remained Tournament Director until 1986, of the Rolex International Junior Tennis Championships on the International Tennis Federation circuit.

Western Connecticut Defeats Southern Maine 7-2
     GORHAM, Maine  --  Senior Kendra Sloat (Fairfield, Conn.) and freshman 
Jenna Kosiba (Bristol, Conn.) earned a pair of points Saturday to lead the 
Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a 7-2 victory over the 
University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's tennis 
match Saturday to the Gorham High School courts.
     The win was the second straight for the Colonials and improved their record 
to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.  The Huskies remain winless on the 
season dropping to 0-10 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
     Sloat posted an impressive straight set win over freshman Kelly Maloney 
(Windham, Maine), 6-1, 6-1, to take the number one singles flight.  Kosiba 
defeated freshman Heidi Graceffa (Calais, Maine), 6-3, 6-4 to take the number 
two flight.  Sloat and Kosiba combined to post an 8-0 win at number one doubles.
     Junior Ashley Kirkpatrick (Sanford, Maine) and sophomore Katie Hoyt 
(Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) picked up three-set victories in the number four 
and six flights, respectively, for Southern Maine's two points.
     Southern Maine will travel to Bowdoin College on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) to 
play the Polar Bear "B" team.  Western Connecticut will host Hunter College on 
Monday (4:00 p.m.).

Alex Aitchinson retired as the men’s and women's tennis coach at Western Connecticut State University after guiding both programs since the spring of 2003.
     The Colonials men's program went 28-7 the past four campaigns.  The women netters went 12-20 the past three falls.

BEARS, HUSKIES TIE FOR LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE MEN’S TENNIS TITLE

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Bridgewater State and Southern Maine tied for first place on the second and final day of action at the two-day Little East Conference Men’s Tennis Championships at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.

BSC, which had players in the championship match in each of the six singles flights and needed a single victory to clinch the team title, dropped all six and finished in a tie with the Huskies, who won all four of their head-to-head matches against the Bears in the finals. Each team finished with 19 points.

Western Connecticut State was third with 14.5 points, host UMass Dartmouth was fourth with nine points, UMass Boston was fifth with eight points, Rhode Island College was sixth with 3.5 points, and Salem State was seventh with two points.

The tournament marked the conclusion of the Little East Conference season.

Player of the Week

Matt Cusack, Senior, Western Connecticut State University
Cusack finished last week with a 5-0 record, going 3-0 at number one singles and 2-0 at number one doubles. He dropped just one four games in six sets of singles play. He was victorious over both Rutgers-Newark and Salem State, 6-0, 6-0, then defeated UMass Dartmouth, 6-2, 6-2. In doubles play, he combined with teammate Wayne Tentler to surrender just one game in each of their two matches.

Rookie of the Week

Wayne Tentler, Sophomore, Western Connecticut State University
Tentler held a 6-0 record last week with a 3-0 mark at number two singles and a 3-0 record at number one doubles. Each of his singles victories were of the straight set variety. In doubles action he teamed up with Matt Cusack for two wins and Henry Ryerson for one victory.

Player of the Week
Matt Cusack, Junior


Cusack was 3-0 in singles action and 2-1 in doubles play, both at the number-one flights, this past week as WCSU went 2-1. Cusack won all his singles matches in straight sets, losing just four games in the three matches. He then paired with teammate Aaron Ribchinsky to defeat teams from Rutgers-Newark and
Salem State at the number-one doubles flight.
