Colonials fall to Coast Guard in opening night of WestConn Invitational

DANBURY, CT (Sep. 4) — The Coast Guard Academy women's volleyball team defeated Western Connecticut State University, 3-0 in the opening round of the WestConn Invitational at Feldman Arena on Friday night.

The Bears swept with scores of 25-18, 26-24 and 25-14.

WestConn, 1-1, was led by junior outside hitter Natalie Crosby (East Haven, CT) who had a team-high 13 kills along with six digs.

Kelley Collins (Massapequa, NY) led the Colonials with 27 digs over the three games.

Becca Stein (Kingston, NY) contributed 12 kills in the loss.

For Coast Guard, Lauren Bloch (Centennial, CO) had a solid outing offensively and defensively. She had a team-high nine kills along with two blocks and 19 digs.

Karen Matic (Oswego, IL) controlled the action at the net, distributing 27 assists while registering four aces. Nicole Johnson (New Braunfels, TX) added eight kills for the winners.

Jessica Anderson (Kalamazoo, MI) led the Bears with 20 digs on the night.

In the other first round match up, Western New England College blanked Johnson and Wales University, 3-0. The Golden Bears won all three games by a score of 25-22.

Rachel Cervone (West Springfield, MA) had a fine all-around match, registering eight kills, 10 digs and two blocks.

Samantha Shomo (Glen Gardner, NJ) followed with seven kills for the winners.

Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, IL) paced WNEC offense as she distributed 27 assists to go along with her 11 digs.

Marci Egbert led the Golden Bears with 14 digs.

Pacing the Wildcats were Ashley Constantino (Marlton, NJ) and Karlie Haack (Selkirk, NY) who each had five kills.

Emma Anderson (Meriden, CT) added four kills, one block and one ace to JWU's cause.

Katie Barrett (Manchester, NH) had a team-high 12 digs in the loss.

The WestConn Invitational continues on Saturday morning. The Colonials face JWU at 9 a.m., then close out the two-day affair against WNEC at approximately 4:30 p.m.
