WestConn volleyball powers past John Jay, 3-0
DANBURY, CT (Sept. 8) — The Western Connecticut State University volleyball team stormed out to a 16-5 lead in game one behind the serving of freshman Katie Hamel (Ronkonkoma, NY) and dominated all three games against visiting John Jay College at Feldman Arena Tuesday evening.
Leading 7-5 in the first game, WestConn’s Katie Hamel stepped to the service line and served nine consecutive points to give the Colonials a commanding 16-5 lead. John Jay pulled within seven points at 21-14, but WestConn maintained the advantage and won by a 25-18 score.
In game two, WestConn rushed out to an early lead 9-2, but a 4-0 run by John Jay prompted the Colonial’s only time out of the match. Coach Poole’s remarks clearly motivated the Colonials as they quickly pulled away to lead 19-8, and took game two 25-15.
WestConn again dominated game three, pulling away early and coasting to a 25-8 win and a 3-0 sweep of the match.
Senior Becca Stein (Kingston, NY) led the Colonials at the net with seven kills and six blocks. Sophomore Jamie Bertilson (Ridgefield, CT) added eight kills and two blocks. Sophomore Kelly Collins (Massapequa, NY) led the WestConn defense with 11 digs, while also serving up four aces.
For John Jay, Zadoora Carson (New York, NY) led the team in digs while Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY) contributed from every position on the floor.
With the win, WestConn’s season record now stands at 3-2, while John Jay falls to 1-1.
WestConn will be in action again on Friday and Saturday, September 11th and 12th, when it travels to the Western New England College Invitational. On Friday, the Colonials take on Newbury College at 5:00pm and Westfield State at 7:00pm. On Saturday, WestConn will face Bay Path College at 1:30pm and WNEC at 4:00pm.
