WestConn opens LEC play with wins over UMass Dartmouth and Keene St.

KEENE, NH (Sept. 19) — Western Connecticut (8-3, 2-0 LEC) finished the day 2-0 defeating the Owls (6-6, 1-1 LEC) and topping the Corsairs 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-12) while UMass.-Dartmouth (7-2, 0-2 LEC) was handed their first two losses of the season.
The Keene State College women’s volleyball team split in an LEC tri-match with a win over UMass.-Dartmouth 3-1 (25-11, 25-22, 26-28, 25-22) and a loss to Western Connecticut 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-23). The split now makes the Owls 6-6 overall on the year and 1-1 in LEC action.
In the first game of the tri-match, the Owls were led by sophomore outside-hitter Tiffani Brooks (Salem, Conn.) with 12 kills and eight digs.
Junior Jamie Levine (Medfield, Mass.) and Laurie Whalen (Niantic, Conn.) each had a team-high 17 digs, while senior setter Jordan Pokryfki (Wasilla, Alaska) put up 36 assists in the win.
UMass.-Dartmouth was led by sophomore outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, Mass.) with a match-high 13 kills and pitched in with 11 digs. Freshman setter Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, Mass.) had 31 set assists, while Libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, Mass.) had 17 digs.
In the second match of the day, UMass.-Dartmouth jumped out to a 1-0 lead (25-19) but then dropped the last three games (25-21, 25-16, 25-12) to the Colonials. Western Conn. had 11 kills from Becca Stein (Kingston, N.Y.) and Vic Rubits (New Fairfield, Conn.). Libero Kelly Collins (Massapequa, N.Y.) had 10 digs, while Sammie Hathaway (Milford, Conn.) put up 36 assists in the win.
Sophomore middle-hitter Cami Ascher (Natick, Mass.) had a match-high 13 kills and Goncalves put up 40 assists in the losing effort for the Corsairs.
In the finale, Western Conn. picked up their second win of the day with a 12 kill match from junior outside-hitter Natalie Crosby (East Haven, Conn.). Stein had nine kills and four solo blocks while Hathaway had 27 helpers.
The Owls were paced by sophomore outside-hitter Bridget O’Bryant (Merrimack, N.H.) with her nine kill, 12 dig match. Pokryfki had 23 assists, while Levine had another double-digit dig match with 10.
The Owls return to action, Thursday, September 24th, as they will travel to Rivier for a 7 p.m. start.
