WestConn volleyball sweeps Eastern Connecticut in LEC match, 3-0

WILLIMANTIC, CT (Oct. 6)— This week's LEC Offensive Player of the Week senior Rebecca Stein (Kingston, NY) had ten kills with a .529 attack percentage and collected six blocks to pace the Western Connecticut State University women’s volleyball team to a three-game sweep of Eastern Connecticut State University Tuesday night at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.

Having lost four of the previous five matches against Eastern, Western (16-5, 4-1 little east) never trailed in the match, posting 25-17, 25-14, 25-16 victories over Eastern (8-11, 0-5 little east). Western has won ten of its last 12 and the Warriors have dropped eight of their last ten. The Colonials remain a half-game behind conference leader Plymouth State University, which needed only four games to defeat defending LEC regular-season and playoff champion Keene State College on its own court.

Rated second in the conference in blocks and attack percentage, the 6-foot-1 inch Stein commited only one error on 17 attack attempts in the match and added three block assists and three solo blocks. As a team, Western had five block solos and 13 assists.

Western scored six straight points to break from a 7-7 tie in Game 1, and scored six straight to pull away from a 3-3 tie in Game 2 to take an commanding lead in the match. Eastern trailed by four points early in Game 3 but pulled even at 14-all on a block by sophomore Samantha Slonski (Griswold) and a kill by sophomore Britt Carrier (Southington). At that point, the Colonials answered with four straight points on two kills, a service ace and a block and were never threatened the rest of the way.

Freshman Paxton Thornton (Sharon) matched Stein with ten kills, junior Sammie Hathaway (Milford) collected 33 assists, and sophomore Kelley Collins (Massapequa, NY) chipped in a game-high 18 digs.

Carrier and sophomore Kristianna Ibsen (Shelton) combined for 13 kills for Estern, with Carrier leading the Warriors with 13 digs. Slonski had four blocks and 18 assists and sophomore Taylor Abelli (Cheshire) had a .905 recpetion percentage on a team-high 21 attempts.

WestConn hosts Kings Point and Manhattanville this Saturday, October 10. The tri-match begins at 11 am.
