WestConn streak at nine with wins over Manhattanville and Kings Point

Manhattanville captures five-set thriller over Kings Point

DANBURY, CT (Oct. 10) — The Western Connecticut State University volleyball team improved to 18-5 on the season with a pair of 3-0 victories over Manhattanville and Kings Point Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.

In the day's first match, sophomore middle hitter Jamie Bertilson (Ridgefield, CT) registered a match-high nine kills and two blocks and help lead the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball team to its eighth straight victory. The Colonials defeated Manhattanville College, 3-0 in the early session of a tri-match on Saturday at the O'Neill Center.

WestConn prevailed, 25-14, 25-23, and 25-20 over the Valiants, which fall to 4-11 on the season.

Other leaders for the Colonials include Chrissy Bell (Prospect, CT) who had a team-high eight digs. Mickey Ghannam (Danbury, CT) had 15 assists against the Valiants.

For Manhattanville, Alexa Zurek had seven kills while Makana Gomes (Honolulu, HI) registered 12 assist.

Defensively, Ally Johnson (Branford, CT) tallied 14 digs and had a block assist.

In the day's second match, Manhattanville came from behind to defeat Kings Point, 3-2. The Valiants defeated the Mariners, 18-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-22 and 17-15 in a five-set thriller.

Kelly Schlittenhardt (Islip, NY) led the way for the winners with 14 kills and a block.

Gomes tallied 28 assists and had 15 defensive digs in the win.

For Kings Point, Jesselyn LaValley (Havelock, NC) had a monster performance with 28 kills and three blocks at the net.

Jenna Palaschak (Annandale, VA) registered 47 assists and had a match-high 30 digs.

Kings Points and WestConn wrap up the tri-match with a projected 3:20 pm start.

In the final match of the day, freshman Paxton Thornton (Sharon, CT) led the Colonials to their ninth consecutive victory recording 16 kills as WestConn won by scores of 25-8, 25-22, and 25-22 for a 3-0 sweep of the match.  Junior Natalie Crosby (East Haven, CT) finished with nine kills, while senior Becca Stein (Kingston, NY) added seven kills, and junior Sammie Hathaway (Milford, CT) handed out 27 assists.  Sophomore Kelly Collins (Massapequa, NY) led the WestConn defense with 18 digs.

For Kings Point, Jesselyn LaValley recorded 11 kills, Jenna Palaschak handed out 25 assists and Ana Fuxchetto (Swink, CO) had 20 digs.

With the pair of victories, the Colonials improved to 18-5 on the season.  WestConn will be back in action again on Wednesday, October 14th, when it travels to Hartford for a non-confrence match against Trinity.  Game time is slated for 7:00pm.
