WestConn volleyball cruises past Rutgers-Newark, 3-0
DANBURY, CT (Oct. 17) — The Western Connecticut State University volleyball team rushed out to an early lead and dominated game one, winning by a score of 25-4, and cruised to a three-game sweep of the University of Rutgers-Newark Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
With the Colonials leading game one 13-3, sophomore Kelley Collins (Massapequa, NY) stepped to the service line and reeled off six straight points to extend the lead to 19-3. After a side-out by Rutgers-Newark, junior Sammie Hathaway (Milford, CT) took the serve for the Colonials and closed out game one with a five-point run.
In the second game of the match, the score remained close early with the score tied 7-7. WestConn then went on a 10-1 run to take a 17-8 lead over the Scarlet Knights, and cruised to a 25-15 game-two win.
In game three, the Colonials got off to a quick 5-0 lead and extended their advantage to 11-3. With WestConn leading 17-5, Rutgers-Newark called a time out, but the Colonials closed out the game 25-10 and the match, 3-0.
Freshman Paxton Thornton (Sharon, CT) led the Colonial offensive attack with 10 kills, while senior Dezz Hymes (Kingston, NY) had 13 assists. Kelley Collins led the defense with 18 digs and had two aces from the service line.
For Rutgers-Newark, Rachel Witt (Basking Ridge, NJ) had four kills and six digs, Val Dauti (West Orange, CT) had 13 digs, and Gabi Mangieri (West Orange, NJ) had 11 assists.
With its ninth win in a row, WestConn’s season record now stands at 20-5, while Rutgers-Newark falls to 1-23.
WestConn will be in action again on Tuesday, October 20th, when it hosts Westfield State at Feldman Arena. Game time is slated for 7:00pm.
