WestConn extends win streak to 10 matches with 3-1 win over Westfield State
DANBURY, CT (Oct. 20) — Junior setter Sammie Hathaway (Milford, CT) had 52 assists and helped the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball team win its 10th straight match on Tuesday night. The Colonials defeated Westfield State College in four sets, 25-14, 26-24, 18-25 and 25-18.
The Colonials improve to 21-5 on the season and await the release of tomorrow's New England Women's Volleyball Association New England Poll to see if they move up from last week's number 14 ranking.
Junior outside hitter Natalie Crosby (East Haven, CT) led all players with 16 kills while freshman middle hitter Paxton Thornton (Sharon, CT) put away 14 attempts at the net.
Kelley Collins (Massapequa, NY), this week's Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Week, anchored the defense recording 24 digs.
Senior Becca Stein (Kingston, NY) had 12 kills and terrorized the net with a match-high five blocks.
For Westfield State, now 14-14, Kerin DeGirolamo (North Attleboro, MA) had 34 assists.
Senior outside hitter Stephanie Bartkus (North Merrick, NY) was the Owls' top hitter with 14 kills in four sets.
Katie Kurty (Ludlow, MA) led the visitors with 28 digs.
WestConn hosts the Colonial Classic on Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24. Friday's action tips off with the Colonials facing Vassar College at 5 p.m. Wesleyan and Babson face off at 7:30. The four matches on Saturday begin with WestConn facing Babson at 9 am.
