Swann’s two goals lift Eastern Connecticut over WestConn, 2-1

BOX SCORE

DANBURY, CT (Sept. 19) — Eastern Connecticut State University senior Sarah Swann’s (Oxford, CT) two first half goals were just enough for the Warriors to defeat Western Connecticut State University 2-1 in the Little East Conference season opener for both teams Saturday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.

After WestConn controlled most of the action early in the game, Sarah Swann got Eastern Connecticut on the board first when she took Taylor Buchanan’s (Enfield, CT) corner kick and blasted a shot past a diving WestConn goalkeeper at the 19:17 mark of the first half.  Less than ten minutes later, Swann split two WestConn defenders and headed a pass from Kelly Wallace (South Windsor, CT) just under the crossbar and into the left corner of the net, giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead.  A stunned WestConn team only managed one shot in the remaining 15 minutes of the first half.

In the second half of play, more than ten minutes passed before either team managed to take a shot.  At 64:03 of the second half, Eastern Connecticut was called for a hand-ball in the box resulting in a penalty kick for the Colonials.  WestConn senior Amanda Genova (New Milford, CT) stepped to the line and drove her shot into the right side of the goal as Eastern Connecticut’s goalie moved left, making the score 2-1.  The Colonials kept the ball in the Eastern end of the field for most of the game’s finals 20 minutes, but never managed another shot on goal, even failing to take advantage of a Warrior yellow-card in the game’s final minute of play.

Eastern Connecticut’s goalkeeper Kim Church (Farmington, CT) only needed to make one save to earn the victory, while WestConn’s Amanda Simon (Brick, NJ) made three saves in taking the loss.

Eastern Connecticut’s season record now stands at 3-2-1, 1-0 in the Little East Conference.  WestConn falls to 3-3 and 0-1 in the LEC.  The Colonials travel to Williams College on Tuesday afternoon for a 4:30pm game.  Williams College is currently undefeated and the #1 ranked Division III women’s soccer team in New England.
