Sales and Wozniak score to lift WestConn to 2-0 win in LEC Quarterfinals
DANBURY, CT (Nov. 3)— Freshman Tracy Sales (Cumberland, RI) and senior Angela Wozniak (Ludlow, MA) each scored a goal to lift the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over University of Southern Maine in the quarterfinals of the Little East Conference Tournament at The WAC on Tuesday night.
The Colonials, 10-9-1, will take on top seed Keene State College in the semifinals on Thursday, November 5. Kick-off is slated for 6 p.m. with the Owls. The two teams battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in a torrential rain storm on Oct. 24 WestConn will attempt to get back to the championship game, on November 7 (at the highest remaining seed) and win its ninth LEC title. It has won the league championship in each of the past three season.
Sales' goal came in the 32nd minute after she received a crisp pass from senior Nicole Sieber (Newtown, CT) from the left side and deposited her third goal of the season. Sieber went uncontested down the left side of the field and found Sales wide open at the top of the box.
Wozniak, one of the top midfielder in the LEC, notched her sixth goal of the season when she bent a corner kick, from the left side, over Southern Maine keeper Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand). Wozniak's marker gave the Colonials a comfortable lead with 20:39 left in the contest.
The Colonials' defense, behind solid play from senior Amanda Genova (New Milford, CT) and Domonique Pascascio (Hamden, CT) held the Huskies offense at bay all night.
Molly Miller (Middlebury, CT) made two saves for the winners and register her first career shut out.
Bradley made 10 saves for Southern Maine and faced a barrage of 33 shots from WestConn.
UMass Boston defeated UMass Dartmouth, 4-0, in the other LEC Quarterfinal match on Tuesday. The Beacons will face second seed Eastern Connecticut, also on Thursday, in Willimantic, CT
GAME NOTE: Head Coach Joe Mingachos was forced to move Senior Night to Tuesday after his regularly-scheduled season finale against Stevens Tech was cancelled at the 11th hour last week. Genova, Sieber, Pascasio, Wozniak and Kelli Veras (Trumbull, CT) played in their final home game tonight.
