Colonials capture Little East Conference thriller, 5-4 over Rhode Island College
DANBURY, CT - (Sep. 22) — After splitting its six singles matches, the Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team captured two of three doubles events and edged Rhode Island College, 5-4 at Westside Courts on Tuesday afternoon.
In singles play, Lauren Post (Danbury, CT) remained undefeated at #1 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Julie Bannon. Brittany Hoynack (Old Lyme, CT) and Alyssa Hoynack (Old Lyme, CT) provided the Colonials with wins at #2 and #3 singles, respectively.
Rhode Island College's Gabriela Batak came from behind to defeat Alison Mahony (Bristol, CT), 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 at the fourth singles match. The Anchorwomen closed out the singles competition with a 3-3 split following Marissa Langellier's and Doris Belanger's wins at #5 and #6.
In doubles action, Post and Jenna Kosiba (Bristol, CT) defeated Bannon and Batak, 8-4 in the lead-off position. The Hoynack sisters edged Brittany LaBarre and Jaclyn Eastman, 8-6, at #2 doubles and it was enough to close out the match.
Belanger and Langellier captured the final doubles pairing, 8-6, over Maxx Zimmer (Sandy Hook, CT) and Elizabeth Bonacci (Danbury, CT).
The Colonials continues their LEC slate when they travel to UMass Dartmouth this Saturday, September 26 for a 1 pm match.
