WestConn clinches Little East Conference Regular-Season Title
with 7-2 win over Salem State... Colonials to host LEC Tournament Finals

SALEM, MA - (Oct. 16)— The Western Connecticut Colonials earned the Little East regular-season championship with a 7-2 win over the Salem State Lady Vikings.

Both teams entered the contest with perfect 5-0 records in conference. The win enabled Western Connecticut to host the Little East Championships on their home court next week.

Salem State, which had won seven straight, managed only one victory in singles play. Megan Cote (Fall River, Mass.) finished her senior campaign with a perfect 7-0 record at No. 1 singles after ousting Lauren Post (Danbury, CT), 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

Western Connecticut swept the next six matches to claim the top-seed in next weekend's tournament. Brittany Hoynack (Old Lyme, CT) defeated Alicia Poore (Stoneham, Mass.),6-4, 6-4 in No. 2 singles, while her sister, Alyssa Hoynack (Old Lyme, CT) swept Carly Muniz (Gloucester, Mass.) in straight sets, 6-0,6-0.

Alison Mahony (Bristol, CT), Jenna Kosiba (Bristol, CT), and Elizabeth Bonacci (Danbury, CT) all won their singles matches to clinch the win for the Colonials, which finished as the conference runner-up in 2008. It was Banacci's win that sealed the victory for the visitors.

Muniz and Michelle McEwen (Billerica, Mass), who remained unbeaten for the Lady Vikings at No. 3 doubles this season, salvaged the only doubles point, beating Brittany DiMauro (Torrington, CT) and Kelly Macey (Fairfield, CT) by an 8-1 score.

Western Connecticut improved to 10-2 and 6-0 in conference, while Salem State dropped to 7-2, 5-1 in conference.

Salem State will end their regular season tomorrow at Bridgewater State. The scheduled start time is at 1:00 PM. Western Connecticut travels to Plymouth State for a 10:00 AM start in its final match this season.

WestConn to host LEC Championship Final Four

The LEC Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament will involve the top six teams and, with weather permitting, consist of first round matches on Tuesday, October 20, semifinals on Saturday, October 24 and the championship match on Sunday, October 25. Seedings will be announced at a later date.

Teams will be seeded based upon LEC regular season standings. The tournament will follow a fixed bracket and the teams will not be reseeded following the first round. The bracket will unfold as follows:

If seedings can be determined by Sunday night, the following will be the schedule for the 2009 Little East Conference Women's Tennis Championships.

• First Round: Tuesday, October 20, 2009
#6 Seed at #3 Seed – 3:00 p.m.
#5 Seed at #4 Seed – 3:00 p.m.

• Semifinals: Saturday, October 24, 2009 Final Four at WestConn - Danbury, Conn.
#4/#5 Seed Winner vs. #1 Seed – 12 Noon
#3/#6 Seed Winner vs. #2 Seed – 3:00 p.m.
NOTE: The highest remaining seeded team will play the first semifinal match.
