PLYMOUTH, N.H. -(Oct. 17) —
Western Connecticut State University clinched a perfect record in the Little East Conference Saturday afternoon with an 8-1 victory over Plymouth State University in the women’s tennis regular season finale at PSU’s P.E. Center Courts.
WestConn, which captured its first LEC regular season title, completes the regular season at 11-2 overall and 7-0 in LEC matches. PSU wraps up the regular season at 3-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play. The LEC Tournament begins next week.
After taking two of the three doubles matches, WestConn put the match away by sweeping the singles matches. The lone mark in the win column for Plymouth State came at No. 3 doubles, where freshman Lacey Mailman (Freedom, N.H.) and junior Megan Cooper (Camarillo, Calif.) pulled out an 8-6 victory.
Junior Lauren Post (Danbury, Conn.) led the Colonials with wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. She needed three sets to down PSU freshman Sara Burke (Barrington, R.I.), improving her singles record to 12-1 this season. Post also teamed with senior Jenna Kosiba (Bristol, Conn.) for a win at No. 1 doubles, improving their mark to 10-3.
Senior Brittany Hoynack (Old Lyme, Conn) and sophomore Alyssa Hoynack (Old Lyme, Conn) were also double winners for WestConn.
The Colonials will be the top seed in next week’s LEC Tournament and will enjoy a first-round bye. The Panthers must wait until the conclusion of the UMass Boston-Southern Maine match to learn if they will make the conference tourney or their season will come to an end.
