SOUTHERN MAINE LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE FAVORITES
WestConn predicted to finish fouth for LEC Coaches

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The University of Southern Maine women’s basketball finds itself in a familiar situation, looking down at the rest of the Little East Conference. The Huskies earned all seven possible first-place votes for 49 total points to earn the top ranking in the annual Little East Conference women’s basketball preseason coaches’ poll after a vote by the eight conference’s head coaches. Each head coach cast a vote, but could not rank their team.

Under the watchful eye of Head Coach Gary Fifield, the University of Southern Maine captured its 11th consecutive Little East Conference Tournament championship and 18th in the program’s history since the inception of the conference in 1986. The Huskies, ranked ninth in the D3Hoops.com preseason poll, registered their 21st NCAA Tournament appearance after hoisting the conference trophy, where they advanced to the sectional semifinal round for the 16th time. Fifield returns nine student-athletes from last year’s squad, including senior forward Angela Santa Fe (Derry, N.H.).

Eastern Connecticut State University edged out Keene State College for the second position in the annual rankings. The Warriors earned the final first place vote and five second-place tallies for 40 total points, out pointing the Owls by just three markers. Under the direction of Head Coach Denise Bierly, Eastern Connecticut finished fifth in the conference standings last season, posting an overall record of 16-11. Bierly boasts a pair of double digits scorers in Little East All-Conference, first-team selection junior forward Ashley McFertridge (Canton, Conn.) and classmate guard Nicky Morey (Columbia, Conn.).

Western Connecticut State University (31) earned the fourth spot, followed by UMass Boston (23), and Rhode Island College (22). Plymouth State University (14) and UMass Dartmouth (9) completed the preseason rankings.

The Little East Conference opens the 2007-08 slate on Friday, Nov. 16, when five of the eight conference institutions are in action.

GORHAM, Maine    Eastern Connecticut State University senior forward Allison Coleman (Jewett City, Conn.) led the annual list of Little East Conference award winners by becoming the first player in the league’s 18-year history to earn four consecutive Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference honors.
A five-time Player of the Week selection during the course of the regular-season, Coleman led the Little East in scoring (15.7 ppg), while she was second in assists (6.5 apg) and steals (2.9 spg), third in rebounding (9.1 rpg) and fourth in blocked shots (1.2).
Rhode Island College freshman forward Kari Geisler (Derry, N.H.), a four-time Rookie of the Week honoree, earned Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Conference honors. Geisler finished second in the league in rebounds (9.4 rpg) and fifth in scoring (12.7).
Rhode Island College Head Coach Spencer Manning and University of Southern Maine Head Coach Gary Fifield, who were cited as the league’s Co-Coaches of the Year.  After inheriting a team that compiled an overall mark of 3-23 and finished eighth in the league a year ago, Seymour guided the Anchorwoman to a third-place finish in the regular-season, an appearance in the semifinals of the conference tournament and an overall mark of 16-11. Fifield, who led the Huskies to their eighth consecutive conference tournament, a perfect 14-0 slate in regular season play, and an overall record of 27-1 entering the NCAA Tournament, has now earned or shared the Coach of the Year Award on 10 occasions (1989, ’90, ’92, ’93, ’95, ’98, ’99, 2002, ’03, ‘04).
Joining Coleman on the All-Conference First Team are University of Massachusetts Dartmouth senior forward Amy Satkevich (Quincy, Mass.), Western Connecticut State University senior forward Christin Morgatto (Seymour, Conn.), and the University of Southern Maine trio of sophomore forwards Tiffany Jones (Skowhegan, Maine) and Megan Myles (Turner, Maine) and senior forward Jen Webster (Braintree, Mass.).
On the All-Conference Second Team, Geisler was joined by Eastern Connecticut freshman forward Sandy Mosely (Goshen, Conn.), Western Connecticut freshman forward Mallory Stevens (Seymour, Conn.) and the Keene State College duo of sophomore forward Stacey Morse (Lebanon, N.H.) and senior forward Andrea Arsenault (Dover, N.H.)
